A jacket’s purpose may be to keep you warm in cold weather, but that’s not all they do. Not only it can protect you from rain, wind, or snow, but can complete your outfit and showcase your personality.

Not all jackets are created equal – meaning that some of them are designed to keep you warm on a cold winter night, while others are made for lighter spring weather. Some are made to be trendy pieces, while others have a unique, timeless look. I am not against inexpensive, trendy jackets, but in my opinion, investing in at least a few high quality ones will worth it in the long run, as you’ll probably want to own them for more than a year. Now let’s see the list of jackets every man should own.

In this article, you’ll find seven timeless jackets for men that were here twenty years ago, and we promise they’ll be here twenty from now on. If you take care of these pieces, they will be with you for a long time. We previously made a similar article about the essential jeans a man should own – make sure to read that as well.

1. Denim Jacket

A trucker jacket, often referred to as a denim jacket or jean jacket, is a type of jacket that is made from denim fabric. It was introduced in the United States during the late 19th century and has since become a popular choice of casual attire for both men and women. It is often considered as an iconic element of American fashion.

Denim jackets are probably the most affordable types of jackets you can own. Not only is it inexpensive, but it is one of the most versatile jackets out there. There are many variations of colors and styles of a denim jacket – such as dark washed, light-washed, or black.

What to look for when buying a denim jacket?

There are two main things to keep in mind when you are looking for your next jacket. Firstly, avoid matching the color of your jacket with your jeans. Many have attempted it, but none have succeeded. If you are wearing dark jeans, opt for a light-colored jacket. Conversely, if you are wearing light jeans, go for a darker one.

The second tip is to avoid trendy pieces such as the ones with text or patterns on the back. There are denim jackets that have fur inside and at the neck part. Some people love to wear denim jackets in winter as well.

I personally don’t prefer wearing denim jackets in colder weather, but that’s just a matter of personal taste. In my honest opinion, denim jackets are better suited for lighter seasons like Spring, Autumn, and chilly Summer nights.

2. Bomber Jacket

Like many modern things, the bomber jacket originates from the military as well. It was a flight jacket that pilots were using during the First World War when they required warm and durable outerwear for flying. Over time the garment was adopted by regular civilians and is now a classic man’s fashion item.

The bomber jacket is another versatile option for us men. There are many colors, patterns, and materials to choose from. If you are planning to buy your first bomber jacket, I recommend opting for basic colors such as black, military green, or burgundy.

While modern bomber jackets are typically designed to be lightweight, there are also some available in thicker fabrics, allowing you to wear them in colder weather as well. The great thing about a bomber jacket is the large variety of outfits you can do with one. Although it is not the classiest option, you can still wear it with a casual shirt outfit. It’s the perfect choice for a Friday night with your friends.

3. Leather Jacket

Ah, the leather jacket. There is nothing more manly than a classic all-black leather jacket. From Steve McQueen to your favorite musicians, there is not a single person who can’t rock the leather jacket. No matter what year it is, the leather jacket is one of the best pieces of outerwear a man can wear.

We know leather can be pricey, but keep in mind that it usually lasts for a lifetime. The more you wear it, the better it gets. For younger people, there are a lot of synthetic leather alternatives. Although it may not be as good quality and durable as the real thing, it can look just as good.

You can choose from several types, such as a biker jacket, an aviator jacket, or a racing jacket, just to name a few. I won’t list them all here right now. We’ll explain the topic deeper in a future article. Visit your favorite store, choose a style you like, and wear your leather jacket everywhere.

4. Windbreaker Jacket

A windbreaker, or technical jacket, is a thin fabric jacket designed to resist wind chill and light rain, making it a lighter version of the jacket. It is usually of lightweight construction and characteristically made of synthetic material.

These types of jackets usually focus on functional abilities rather than aesthetics. Some windbreakers are made out of gore tex material which has a water resistant effect and allows you to stay dry in any weather condition.

It often uses elastic waistbands, armbands, and zippers to allow adjustments for the current weather conditions. There’s nothing worse than wanting to do outdoor activities, the weather is bad, and you don’t have the right jacket for the occasion.

It has happened to me several times. If you enjoy outdoor activities such as running, hiking, or any other outdoor sports, you might want to invest in a technical jacket – especially nowadays when most places can be closed overnight.

A great alternative to the classic windbreaker is a Harrington jacket. Originally known only as a Baracuta jacket or a G9 is a lightweight, waist-length jacket made of cotton, polyester, wool, or suede. It is a classic piece but looks just as stylish today as it was at its debut. Harrington jackets were worn by stars like James Dean.

5. Parka Jacket

Parkas are casual jackets for those cold winter days. They are often stuffed with down or synthetic fiber and sometimes feature a fur-lined hood. Thanks to their warm and relaxed design, the parkas are perfect for those snowy days, and they will keep you staying warm.

Just pair with jeans and sneakers or classy Chelsea boots for a stylishly laid-back look.

A great winter alternative for the parka jacket is the Puffer Jacket. The Puffer jacket is a quilted coat that is insulated with either duck or geese feathers. Air pockets created by the bulk of the feathers allow for the retention of warm air.

6. Topcoat

It is probably the most formal option in the article. You can find many versions of the topcoat in clothing stores and there should be at least one in every man’s wardrobe. Topcoats are often confused with overcoats. Overcoats are most commonly used in winter when warmth is more important. While they may look alike, the length and fabrics are different.

The Difference Between a Topcoat and an Overcoat

The difference between a topcoat and an overcoat is one of weight, length, and style. An overcoat is a long coat with sleeves that is worn on top of other clothing for protection against the cold and/or weather. A topcoat is a lightweight overcoat. As far as length is concerned, overcoats usually extend below the knee, while topcoats end at or above the knees.

The beauty in topcoats is the versatility of styles, you can easily find a single-breasted or double-breasted piece – also, when picking the color, the sky’s the limit. The topcoat is one of the most stylish options a man can wear if they want to dress elegantly. A great feature of this coat is that you can dress them up or down. I think a topcoat can fit quite well with casual attire if you are comfortable with it. Sometimes people underestimate the versatility of the topcoat.

However, it is usually worn as formal attire like with suits or a shirt and chinos, but don’t underestimate the potential of this coat. One thing to keep in mind, if you’re wearing it with casual clothes, try to make your outfit as simple as possible. I’m talking about a plain white or black t-shirt and no torn jeans. Also, avoid any printing on clothing.

7. Trench Coat

Finally, the trench coat. Worn by soldiers during the first world war, the trench coat has a rich military heritage. Nowadays, the lightweight yet protective style is a staple for every modern gentleman around the world. Add one to your wardrobe, and you’ll always have a smart coat on hand for the cozy autumn days.
